‘Oh Canada’ Most Popular Song at the Pan-American Championships

The Pan-American Championships were held Sept. 15 – 17 ’06 in Mexico City at the site of the ’68 Olympic Games. Fifteen countries from the Americas sent teams to the competition; Canada sent a team of athletes chosen from across our vast nation. Four of those athletes came from BC: Kristin Bauder (Jr. kayak), Gillian Fedechko (Sr. canoe), Nicole Haywood (Jr. canoe) and Sean McBeath (Jr. Canoe). All of the BC athletes appeared on the podium!

Kristin Bauder brought home two silver medals, one for Jr. Women’s K-2 1000m and Jr. Women’s K-4 1000 m.

Gillian Fedechko and partners won three gold: one with Mallorie Nicholson in Sr. Women’s C-2 1000m, and two with Christine Wessman in Sr. Women’s C-2 550 m and 200m

Nicole Haywood, in the Jr. Women’s C-1, got two golds in 200m and 500m, and a silver in 1000m

Sean McBeath, along with his C-2 partner Todd MacDonald went home with two silver in 1000m and 200 m., and a bronze in Jr. men’s C-2 500m.

At the end of the regatta, Canada won gold for junior and senior teams, and with total points in the regatta, Canada came first, followed by Mexico (Viva Mexico!), and Brazil.
